You Don't have to pay for protection
The internet is the greatest economic opportunity since the gold rush. Honest people of integrity are using it to make fortunes but just like every opportunity it has attracted scammers, con-artists, thieves and every type of parasite known to man. You don't have to buy a security system and hire guards to protect you from the unscrupulous. With a little knowledge and common sense you can protect yourself for free.
Just because it's free doesn't mean it's inferior.
Almost all of the research, I have read, says that the freeware available to protect you is as good as, and sometimes better than, the software you buy. AVG's free edition, Ad-Aware 7, Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 and ZoneAlarm are some of the top rated freeware. I use them, except for ZoneAlarm, and have never had a problem. I don't use a firewall because I am on Juno dialup for about an hour a day, rarely use Internet Explorer, don't have Outlook installed and both Symantec and GRC.com say my ports are closed. If you can't close your ports, are online a lot, using Outlook/Outlook Express or are using cable/dsl than you need a firewall. I rarely use Internet Explorer. I prefer Maxthon. It does use the IE core and API's just like my Juno browser but it's different enough to give the bad guys trouble.
Some of the pay software are actually bad guys in disguise.
Some are slightly changed infringing copies of the good freeware. Some spyware scanners install adware. Some adware scanners install spyware. Some do both. Some ask you with a popup ad if you would like a free scan and put bad things in before the scan so it can say your system needs cleaning, charge you for the cleaning and then put more bad things in to spy on you. The best place to find out who are the good guys and who are the bad is Spyware Warrior. They maintain a database that is updated frequently and is free.
I protect myself from bad websites.
I use the IE core security settings to protect me that's why I use browsers that use the IE core. I set the security for My Computer, Local Intranet and Trusted Sites low. For the Internet they are set to medium and for Restricted Sites they are set high and everything is disabled. To tell my browsers which are the restricted sites I use IE Spyad which is free. Every month I download the new list of bad sites from IE Spyad and update my restricted sites. I can easily add any individual site to my Trusted Sites or Restricted Sites. I also use the FireFox browser, which doesn't use any of the IE core or APIs, if I even suspect there might be a hazard.
I update Windows, AVG, Spybot, Ad-Aware and IE Spyads every month.
If I think I still might have a problem I get a free second opinion by using the free online services.
You don't have to pay for protection using freeware and free services but if you find them useful you should upgrade to their pay versions which have either more features and/or support and in some cases, like Maxthon, you can make a donation. These are good programers who need our support for future projects.
The following links include all of the freeware I talked about plus some others that I find useful.

http://www.amsn.ro/Hypemeter: Hollywood hypocrites
During the 2000 election Alec Baldwin, and many others, said he would leave if Bush was elected and Robert DeNiro said he would live in London. Neither did. I guess the higher tax rates caused their financial managers or their publicist or agent or some other toady to advise against it. During this election Robert Redford, among others, said they would leave for Canada. Canada has said they won't be treated special and will have to get in line with all of the other immigrants and wait a year or more. They won't. If they can't get special treatment they will stay right here where they can be treated SPECIAL and enjoy the lower tax rates. I give these hypocrites a 2 on the hypemeter, after all they been throwing these tantrums for so long they mean nothing now.
A new attack
From: The Kim Komando Show Electronic Newsletter
Issue Date: Nov. 6, 2004
Vol. 8, No. 45
Kim Komando Show Home Page:
This new danger is a phishing attack. Phishing is computer slang for attacks in which criminals pretend to be a bank or other institution. They try to trick you into giving up your password and user name.
Most people have learned not to fall for this. But this new attack could fool the most careful people. Here's how it works:
The criminals send you an e-mail (spam). When you open the e-mail, a small program called a script runs. Note that you only need to open the e-mail; there is no attachment.
The scripting program goes to your HOSTS file, located deep in your computer. The actual path in Windows XP is: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\HOSTS
It enters your bank's Web address (for instance, YOURBANKdotCOM) in the HOSTS file. It also enters an Internet Protocol (IP) number for the criminals' address.
The next time you need to surf to your bank, you attempt to go to YOURBANKdotCOM. When you enter that address, or any other address, the browser first goes to the HOSTS file to find the IP number. If it isn't there (it normally would not be), it goes to a special computer on the Internet to find the IP number.
However, the criminals have put your bank's address in the HOSTS file, along with their IP number. So you are automatically sent to that IP number, which is the criminals' computer. It looks like the bank's
Web site, so you enter your user name and password. That gives the criminals the information they need to enter your account and steal your money.
How can you protect yourself? Some anti-virus programs guard against this kind of thing; others do not. To be safe, you must disable your computer's scripting ability. To do that:
--In Windows XP, click Start>>My Computer. Click Tools>>Folder Options. Select the File Types tab. Click File Types, then scroll to and click VBScript Script File. Click Advanced. In the Actions box, click Open. Click Remove.
If you need to restore scripting, click New. Put Open in the Action box. In the next box, click Browse. Find wscript.exe in C:\Windows\System32. Double-click it.
--In Windows ME and 2000, the procedure is similar. If you need to restore scripting in Windows ME, the wscript.exe file is in C:\Windows.
--In Windows 98, you must disable Windows Scripting Host. Click Start>> Settings>>Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. Select the Windows Setup tab. Double-click Accessories. Click the box next to Windows Scripting Host to deselect it. Click OK>>Apply>>OK.
This attack is not yet a threat in the United States. But it is only a matter of time. Do not fail to protect yourself. And forward this newsletter to your family and friends.
Should You Disable Windows Scripting Host-:
http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/columns/executive_tech/article.php/3436471If you disable Windows scripting some of your programs may not work because they use scripting. When I tried this CookieJar and Power Defrag failed. I have since reenabled scripting but locked my hosts file by setting it's attribute as read only. My hosts file was blank and I hope this is all that needs to be done. Mark.
How to Repair Affected PCs
From:
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,118489,00.aspTo prevent the Trojan horse from attacking, PC users should keep their versions of Windows and Internet Explorer up-to-date with Microsoft's security patches, and consider using an alternative browser. However, it's important to note that once your computer has been compromised, the modified Hosts file will affect any browser you use on the infected PC, not just Internet Explorer.
If you've already been infected with JS/QHosts21-A, you may need to manually change your Hosts file back to its original format, says Dave Jevans, chair of the Anti-Phishing Working Group. If you're running Windows XP, you can modify the file (which is located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) by opening it with a text editor, such as Notepad, WordPad, or Microsoft Word. For the JS/QHosts21-A exploit, the following entries will be visible in the file, Jevans says:
200.155.4.45 www.unibanco.com.br
200.201.166.200 www.caixa.com.br 200.155.100.225 www.bradesco.com.br
If you see those entries, delete them, save the file, and reboot your system.
I am a retrosexual and proud of it
http://home.mn.rr.com/wwftdThe worthless word for the day is: retrosexual [neologism] the antithesis of the metrosexual: a man with an undeveloped aesthetic sense who spends as little time and money as possible on his appearance and lifestyle "Ms Dent's book also predicts a backlash against the suave metrosexual man in the form of the scruffy retrosexual, who is defined as spending as little time and money as possible on his appearance." Dee's recipe of the month: Fish with Crab Stuffing
In our area we are in the midst of rockfish season. Rockfish is a local delicacy and during the season anglers are allowed to keep 2 fish per day per person. My neighbor G. gave us an 8 oz. slab from the fish he caught. Rockfish have a delicate flavor and can use some help to flavor it up.
For Stuffing:
1 6 oz Can Crab (flaked) 1 tbs Worcestershire Sauce
1 Egg 1 tsp Old Bay Seasoning
1 tbs Mayonnaise 7 Saltine Crackers (crumbled)
Mix all of the above ingredients well. Form into three patties and wrap in single layer in plastic wrap. Place in freezer for 30 minutes. Put 1 tbl oil in pre-heated pan and place patties in pan and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, turning over after 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
For Fish:
1 8-10 oz Fish Fillet (Cut in half) 1/4 tsp Salt
1/3 cup Flour 1 Egg
1/4 tsp Garlic Powder 2-3 tbs Milk
1/8 tsp Old Bay Seasoning
Mix Flour, Seasonings, Egg and Milk until you have a medium thick batter. Dip in Fish and coat well. Put 1 tbs oil in pre-heated pan, add fish and cook over medium heat until both sides are browned. Place Fish on Microwaveable plate and cook in Microwave on HIGH for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. Top Fish with Stuffing and serve.
Just a thought
Einstein's famous equation E=MCsquared relates energy to mass via the space/time constant of the speed of light squared. There should also be an equation that relates space to time via an energy/mass constant. This equation should be as simple as Einsteins to maintain symmetry such as Planck volume equals Planck time multiplied by electron volts hv=htEv (or hv=htEvsquared to maintain symmetry). An electron volt is a measurement of energy or mass. An electron has the rest mass of 510,000 Ev and an infrared photon has an energy of 1 Ev. Max Planck's constant, h, is a natural feature of Quantum Mechanics. If the universe contains 10 to the 88th power Ev than one Planck time, ht, after the big bang the universe would have inflated to 10 to the 88th power Planck volumes, hv. The universe would have continued to inflate until additional Planck volumes would have increased its diameter less than the speed of light. The Hubble constant ( the speed of the expansion of the universe ) we see today, of 75 kilometers per second per megaparsec, would fall inline with the size of the observable universe and the energy/mass it contains.
Please read this book
John Stossel's "Give me a break" is a great read. Everyone should buy, borrow or get this book at their library. He says things that I have been saying for years and some things I haven't. His common sense suggestion of "make the loser pay" for revamping our court system and stopping frivolous lawsuits will work and make everyone happy except the lawyers.
